Smartphones have become an indispensable part of our daily lives. We use them for contact, taking photos, uploading documents to the cloud, searching the internet, and even charging other smartphones.

However, with such a large number of smartphones on the market, deciding which one to buy is never easy. It's never easy choosing which one would better fit our needs.

Here's a checklist of items to think about before you purchase your next smartphone.

1) Build quality

A durable smartphone is determined by its build. The entire handset industry is split into two forms of construction: metal and plastic.

Some also have glass-coated panels, but these are few and far between. If you're prone to dropping your phone, a metal or plastic-built handset is the way to go.

Glass-based handsets can shatter if dropped from a distance of 2-3 feet.

2) Display

The cellphone display size and resolution are determined by how you use your smartphone. If you often stream images, edit photos or videos, or download and watch movies, a smartphone monitor with a full-HD or QHD resolution of 5.5-inch to 6-inch would be the ideal size.

Something with a monitor greater than 6 inches is not only bulky but also difficult to bring around. If you're a frequent smartphone user who mostly uses it to check emails, chat, and browse social media apps, anything with a 5-inch to 5.5-inch HD or full-HD monitor would be perfect.

3) Processor

The smartphone processor power varies depending on various factors such as the operating system update, the user interface, bloatware, and more.

If you're a power user who needs to edit photos/videos/documents online, play demanding games, stream videos, or often use apps in split-screen mode, smartphones with Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 or Snapdragon 820/821 can render multitasking ease.

4) ​Camera

Simply having a higher megapixel count does not imply that the smartphone camera is better. Aspects such as camera aperture, ISO levels, pixel size, autofocus, and others are also important. A 16MP rear camera is not always superior to a 12MP camera. The front-facing camera follows the same logic.

As the number of pixels in an image increases, the image becomes larger and clearer when viewed on a small screen. For speedy shots even in low light, a photographer enthusiast would want a camera with a 12 or 16MP sensor and an aperture of f/2.0 or lower. Even an 8MP or 12MP camera with an f/2.0-f/2.2 aperture would suffice for a casual shooter.

5) Battery

The battery use varies from user to user depending on how the smartphone is used. If you are a heavy user who works on smartphones, plays games, streams videos, and more, choose a smartphone with a battery capacity of at least 3500mAh or higher. A smartphone with a 3000mAh battery will be sufficient for a full day of use whether you are an average or light user.

6) User interface/OS version

When selecting a smartphone, the user interface and OS version are both key aspects to consider. These are the interfaces that users would have to interact with any time they want to access something, so it should be quick and easy to use.

Motorola handsets, Nexus/Pixel smartphones, and even Android One devices are available for the most simple and pure Android experience. Different interfaces, such as ZenUI, Xperia UI, Samsung TouchWiz, EMUI, and others, have more useful features for sorting apps and more choices in types that the company believes consumers would prefer.

OEM smartphones, on the other hand, come with bloatware and some software that you would almost certainly never use. As a result, we suggest that you check out the phone before making a decision.

7) Storage

The OS and the applications that come pre-installed on the computer take up a considerable portion of the smartphone's volume.

A 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, or larger storage device does not always come with the exact amount of space specified. If you want to keep fewer apps on your computers, 32GB storage is an option.

Users who want to store a greater number of apps can opt for the 64GB or 128GB models. A 16GB model with microSD card support is also available.

8) Security/extra features

Most smartphones now have additional security features such as fingerprint scanners or even iris scanners. These are used not only to lock and unlock a phone, but also as a password to gain access to specific files, documents, or applications.

Although even a $500 smartphone may have a fingerprint sensor, iris scanners are still uncommon. Since most of us have personal details on our phones these days, it's preferable to purchase a smartphone with these extra security features.

9) Audio/speakers

For those who rely on heavy video streaming or video conferences, speakers and the quality of audio coming out of them can be critical parameters. If you enjoy on-the-go entertainment, look for a phone with front-facing speakers. Even when the smartphone is kept in landscape mode, the sound is clear.

A standard handset with bottom-firing speakers should suffice if you don't do any video streaming or video conferencing. Those with speakers in the back are also appropriate.

10) Headphone jack/USB port

Ports may also be a consideration to think about. While smartphones now have both micro-USB and USB Type-C ports, it is preferable to move to USB Type-C not only because it is easier to plug in but also because it is future-proof.

A growing number of smartphones have begun to support the new standard. Few other manufacturers have begun to abandon the 3.5mm headphone jack, but it could be another two years before all OEMs have finally moved to USB Type-C-based headphones jacks.
